Our topic is stress.
We tend to see stress as a result of emotional or anxiety states and forget that stress can also be as a result of metabolic poisons generated within the body from a bad diet and exposure to chemicals.
When there is any form of stress the adrenal glands are the ones responsible for helping us to deal with this physical stress. The gland does this by secreting hormones such as cortisol which help the body respond to stress. This is a normal function however if there is constant physical and/or emotional stress the gland becomes exhausted and levels of high and low cortisol over prolonged periods cause the body to experience disturbance in function which impacts on the immune system.
SYMPTOMS OF HIGH CORTISOL –Raised blood pressure, raised blood sugar, weight gain, frequent infections and inflammation.
SYMPTOMS OF LOW CORTISOL –Low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, frequent infections and even panic attacks.
It is important to remember that the adrenals are part of the endocrine system and as such they impact on all the other endocrine glands such as the thyroid.
These are herbs which help the body deal with the effect of stress, whether it be physical and/or emotional
EXAMPLES OF ADAPTOGENIC HERBS ARE
RHODIOLA we stock as a single herb or mixed with sceletium, a South African herb which is used for mild depression. Great combination to help with anxiety and depression.
Others are ASHWAGANDHA, GINSENG AND WILLOW ADRENAL TONIC.
HOW TO HELP THE ADRENAL GLANDS
Remove stimulants such as coffee, cigarettes and sugar. These aggravate emotional states enormously and affect blood sugar levels which impact on the body physically
Include B vitamins daily (stress vitamins) particularly vitamin B5 which feeds the adrenals
Vitamin C – bodily requirements increase during stress
Include an adrenal supporting remedy such as rhodiola, ashwagandha or try one of our adrenal tonics, consider a body detox.
Improve the diet to give the body all the essential nutrients it needs to function well and support stressed adrenals. Include the colourful fruits and vegetables especially the red foods as their colours are a sign of potent vitamins and minerals. Reduce the white foods such as sugar, bread and dairy.
Drink plenty of healthy fluids such as filtered water and vegetable juices
